Key Services

Guin focuses on three main areas. Short lists make it easy to scan.

  • HVAC: installation or replacement of air conditioning and heating, system repair, and regular maintenance plans (Guin Guard).
  • Plumbing: plumbing inspection, drain and sewer installation and repair, water heater install and repair, water pipe and general plumbing repair.
  • Generators & Electrical: Generac generator installation and repair, electric installation or replacement, and electric repair.

Services also include drain installation, sewer repair, and ongoing preventative maintenance to keep systems running longer and with fewer breakdowns.

Company History

Guin began in 1958 as a group of specialized mechanics to support Guin Company's mechanical contracting work. Over time, the contracting side grew large, and the service crew built strong customer relationships. In the mid-1990s the company moved to operate independently as Guin Service, Inc., keeping a focus on skilled trade work and steady service.

Guin Service became a certified dealer and service contractor for Generac generators. Local staff like Barry Nelms handle generator consultations and installations.

Leadership

The business is now led by a fourth-generation family member who joined in January 2011 as Director of Marketing and Customer Service. Joseph works locally and stays active in community projects. Leadership maintains hands-on involvement with crews and with customers across the Birmingham area.

We have had Guin Services come out on three different occasions, and these guys are the only people I will call when we need service or repairs. They have NEVER attempted to get me to pay for anything outrageous. They have even come, don't a repair that took 2 minutes, and then would let me even pay for a service call. They are honest, fair, other businesses should look at what they are doing.

Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. Time to slaughter the Guin HOG. Richard came out to my daughters house to snake a drain and left a bill for $625. Completely outrageous for an hours worth of work. Clearly trying to take advantage of a young single woman. We will never do business with them again.

We were quoted for a job and I signed off on. 4 months later I called and asked about the repair. Guin showed up and worked on a bathtub faucet for 3 full days and said that parts had increased and they had mismeasured the location of the faucet. They would need to remove the water heater. After the original price increased $300, I've moved on. Homeowner beware.

Oh my gosh, I called Guin at 4:30 because my toilet started leaking and Chris McLeod was here at 5:15! Y'all! That's amazing response! I did not get charged a premium for after 5:00 service and they fixed my problem in about 20 minutes. I will never, ever use another company again! I'm a Guin client for life!

I had my AC go out a while back, and I was extremely grateful that Guin was able to fix it. Being in an 87 degree house is no fun at all, and they sent who I think was one of their most experienced HVAC techs to come fix my AC. He was very knowledgeable, on time, and did amazing work. He even gave us a free pen with their name and number for future work. Very cool company. No pun intended.

Only being a homeowner for 3 years, my experience with A/C repair services are pretty limited. But I have had a few experiences and one thing always seems consistent is the desire to get in new parts and not attempt other methods. I have felt this some with Guin, but overall they seem pretty straight forward.

I have had the same technician come out both times and I really like him. He is personable and knowledgable. And for the most part, tries to help me figure out what is best. But this last time, I had a freon leak and the most logical place was the evaporator coil from what he could tell. The options that were given, were refill the freon and see what happens or replace the whole thing. I inquired about using a sealant and I was given very little optimism that it would work. But they would be willing to try. When he came to do that, he noticed a significant leak on the outside unit and concluded that is the main cause of why it was running down so low. A much cheaper repair than replacement.

In this situation, deciding to not replace the entire coil resulted in a much cheaper and still effective repair. Hence why it is a tougher pill to swallow that I almost paid $3k for that (plus the attempt the sale of labor warranties). But in all fairness, he did inform me of the actual cause once he found it. A dishonest person could have just done the sealant and let it continue to leak. It was a situation that all worked out in the end. But I always will be wary of repair work that I know very little about. I feel like my experiences with Guin were never dishonest. But I would definitely do some research on issues once they give you a diagnosis as the up-sale will always be there.
