Founded in 1912, the business traces back to Arthur W. Crooks. Born in 1885 in Goshen, Indiana, Arthur moved to Sturgis as a boy and later to Battle Creek to learn plumbing. He served as Battle Creek plumbing inspector in 1909 and purchased Hanchett Plumbing in 1912 when his wage had once been 12.5 cents an hour.

His children joined the trade, and the company stayed in the family through the decades. Helen and Warren ran the shop in the mid-1900s, and today Arthur’s grandson, Arthur W. Crooks II, runs the business with the same local focus and practical knowledge.
